Capt. Charles Marion Maltby "served with honors through the Civil War; by service and bravery reaching the rank of Captain.

He and his family resided in Minnesota, which was then considered the West. In 1888 they moved to Washington State, disposing of extensive interests in the way of grist and shingle mills, stores and real estate.

Since going to Washington their time "has been divided between business in Seattle and pleasure here, there and everywhere--Always it has been the Hotel business."
